Colorado Brevet Series – 200km Brevet – 17-April-2005

Tips for the Rider

A New Route! – We start in Show Low, Arizona at 6,000 ft. and head east over the Alpine Divide (8,000 ft.) to Reserve, New Mexico. From Show Low to Springerville, the landscape is open, semi-desert and volcanic. From Springerville to the Reserve, we pass through forests, past lakes, and up canyons. There are limited services along the route - in fact only in Springerville / Eagar, Alpine, and Reserve. Make sure you think ahead nutritionally, especially as you pass Reserve for the spur out to Cruzville prior to finishing.

Now Paired with Westbound 200k - The Casa Grande region has organized a complementary, westbound, brevet on the preceding day, Reserve to Show Low.

Official Checkpoints – Please patronize stores used for checkpoints.

Contrail Support and Checkpoints - Contrail riders may use Contrail support, but only at the official checkpoints. (That is one reason why we've included so many checkpoints.) In addition, Contrail Support can sign your brevet card at any of the checkpoints. Tom Marucco, the assistant tourleader, has graciously offered to be of assistance to brevet riders at least as far as Reserve.

Lighting – Remember that lighting and reflective equipment are required if you are riding in darkness/dusk, so come prepared if you feel you will not finish before dark. Lighting includes street-legal headlight and taillight. Reflective equipment includes vest, ankle bands, and reflective material on your bike.

Secret Checkpoints – Any brevet may have one or more secret checkpoints along the route.

Finish – If there is no event official at the finish when you arrive, leave your brevet card with the desk clerk at the Rode Inn, after having it registered and signing your card.

DNF – We do not sweep the course. If you do not finish the brevet, you may leave a message on (303) 604-1163.

Rules and Waiver– Please review the Brevet Rules and sample Rider Waiver.

Not a Race – Observe traffic rules, ride responsibly, … and have fun!

- Brevet Basics -

  • Brevets are not races. Finishing is more important than finishing time. Lending assistance to other riders who require it is more important than finishing quickly. The last rider to finish within the time limits gets precisely the same credit as the rider who’s first to come in.
  • Observe traffic regulations, be safe, share the road, and be courteous to your fellow riders, fellow road users, checkpoint establishments, and members of the communities you visit.
  • Make sure your brevet card is filled out completely, including each checkpoint entry and your signature. Incomplete brevet cards (including missed checkpoints) are grounds for DQ.

This is a sample of the waiver you sign at ride sign-in.
