Denver-Aspen 300km Brevet – August 5, 2006

Tips for the Rider

®     Official CheckpointsBailey, Fairplay, Buena Vista, and Twin Lakes.

®     Personal Support – As with all brevets, if you have individual or shared personal support, your support can only meet and assist you at checkpoints and as specified by officials (except in emergency: in that regard, any personal support is expected to assist other riders in an emergency.)

®     Nutrition/HydrationPlan Ahead! – The checkpoints are at stores or in towns with stores, where you can find food and drink.  In addition, there are stores at Pine Junction and at Johnson Village (before Buena Vista).  There are no stores between Twin Lakes and Aspen, including the long climb up Independence Pass.  You should in general plan ahead and anticipate your needs, especially if the upcoming segment has significant climbing.

®     Weather – As in all mountainous terrain, be aware of and prepare for changing weather conditions.  By the time you reach the climb to Independence Pass, it will be late enough in the day to produce storms. Remember that Independence Pass is at/above timberline (tundra fields).

®     Lighting – Remember that lighting and reflective equipment are REQUIRED for the ride start, which will have  hours in darkness.  Lighting includes street-legal headlight and taillight.  Reflective equipment includes vest, ankle bands, and reflective material on your bike.

®     Transport from Woody Creek – As this is a point-to-point brevet, you may need to make some arrangement to get home.  Note that the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority runs service through Woody Creek to Aspen and other points valley: http://www.rfta.com/woodycreeksummer.html.

®     Finish and Brevet Card – If you finish before an RMCC official is present, have the Woody Creek Tavern representative note the finish time on your card.  Then mail your card to Charles Henderson, 2 Blue Grouse Ridge Rd., Littleton CO 80127.  Your card is required for you to get credit for your ride.

®     DNF – We do not sweep the course.  If you do not finish the brevet, leave a message at 720-480-9714.

®     Not a Race – Observe traffic rules and ride responsibly.  SAFETY FIRST.  And have fun!

- Brevet Basics -

®     Brevets are not races.  Finishing is more important than finishing time.  Lending assistance to other riders who require it is more important than finishing quickly.  The last rider to finish within the time limits gets precisely the same credit as the rider who’s first to come in.

®     Observe traffic regulations, be safe, share the road, and be courteous to your fellow riders, fellow road users, checkpoint establishments, and members of the communities you visit.

®     Brevets are tests of persistence and self-reliance.  If you have personal support, they may only meet you at the checkpoints.

®     Make sure your brevet card is filled out completely, including each checkpoint entry and your signature.  Incomplete brevet cards (including missed checkpoints) are grounds for DQ.
