Hotest Colorado 1200k Ever!
23
starters and
15
finishers rode the second edition of the Colorado Front Range 1200k.
Approximate high temperatures were 96° on Day 1, 98° on Day 2, 99° on Day 3,
and 89° on Day 4 (a real cool-off). But some areas out on the Plains reached or exceeded 100°.
Pre-dawn hours were in the low 50's, though, so some good early hours, and up at altitude.
The major route changes were on Day 1 - up to Ward and the Peak-to-Peak Highway 4
then down St. Vrain Canyon (not possible in 2023 because of a rockslide in St. Vrain Canyon)
and on Day 2 - up St. Vrain Canyon, Peak-to-Peak Highway to Estes Park and Glen Haven.
That plus the addition of Olde Tale Road at the last minute.
All this made for lots more scenery.
A big thanks to Brent Myers and Beth Long, who provided a cookout at check-in,
and snacks and drinks waiting for riders in the hotel lobby.
Some stats:
- 23 riders, including one 1000k riders
- 65% finishing rate (all but one because of heat) - 80% in 2023
- 60% non-local riders (including one from the Philippines) - 83% in 2023
Congratulations to all the finishers, and kudos to everyone for their persistence!

Greenest Roggen Audax Ever!
Mike reports:
"Greenest Roggen ever! 11 starters and 11 finishers, Rode, Ate, Drank and completed this 200k Audax together.
We rode Colorado style audax, a little more flexibility rotating lead to share the windbreaking,
but always together. With our wet spring, green was everywhere.
Lots of farms, animals checking us out and rolling roads greeted us as we headed due east all morning.
But, unlike the last 2 weeks, just Colorado blue skies
The Valero owner in Roggen recognized us and looks forward to seeing us in December.
I guess they don’t get many cyclists there. Hudson Pepperpod team were ready for us with a table reserved.
It’s the best part of Audax, because of timetable, we can predict arrival times,
which Grace also appreciated for Happy Hour stop at Turek’s.
Only downside to the PepperPod is the large portions, which some of us had trouble resisting…
made the small climbs returning to Longmont a little tough for this ride leader :-).
"After ramen and drinks, we headed into Niwot via the scenic route.
But before we left, a couple of votes were taken. 1. By unanimous acclimation with one recusal (me),
the team voted to make my house the Rando Clubhouse (like they have in France).
2. Agreed by overwhelming consent, Vail Glenwood Springs Vail Ride will be primary Audax next year.
We can carpool, as long as we take it easy to keep all riders together on return, it is perfect Audax."
Thanks to Mike Turek for leading!

4
official starters and
4
finishers rode the Palmer Divide Gravel Getaway 125 km Populaire. Corinne reports:
"Low-lying clouds and unseasonably cool temperatures set the stage for a day of challenging weather conditions
that never really manifested. The course attracted two riders new to both RMCC and RUSA
as well as a few of our regular club riders. Curiously, there were none of the standard brevet riders in attendance.
Staying together as a group for much of the course, the riders enjoyed the route and the camaraderie and
finish times are fairly close together for a route that traditionally separates riders by hours.
Congratulations to all the riders, and especially our two new RMCC members!"

Shadiest Poudre Canyon Brevets in Years!
11
starters and
9
finishers rode the Poudre Canyon 300k/400k/600k.
Temps were mild, topping out in the low 70's down here, making for a chilly time in Rustic.
Rashid commented,
"Aside from a wet road, ten minutes of rain, and a moment that stung like hail, the storm quickly passed.
I attribute the lack of precipitation to the talismanic nature of the rain jackets we’d donned in anticipation of a soaking."
Typical headwinds coming back from Rawhide, and strange nightlife at the 7-Eleven in Platteville.
Reassuring consistency on these rides.

Nicest Glen Haven 300k Ever?
18
starters and
16
finishers rode the Glen Haven 300k.
Weather was near perfect, with a mild 46° start, topping out at 78°, light breezes,
and loads of sun. The lush fields of our peak green season juxtaposed against the bright white
of the freshly snowed-upon mountains.
We had to detour from Rd. 6 (closed until August because of roadwork) to Rd. 2, adding 4 miles
and some extra traffic. Fortunately, Niwot Road had just reopened where it crosses the Diagonal,
after a closure to put in a bike tunnel.

We returned to the Coal Creek Golf Course Grill

Mike reports: "Riding a similar route to 2024 due to its total excellence of views,
variation and pleasant roads, we headed out from Red Feather Lakes…how many Fleche
teams start at a Feather?
"Spectacular Colorado blue skies, green hills and white high mountains were everywhere.
But most notably, we cycled 40% gravel!*
We must have ridden on every surface, rutted forest access roads descending from Red Feather Lakes,
Smooth MgCl and Pot Holed MgCl roads in Larimer and Boulder Counties, dusty, deep gravel in
Pawnee Grass Lands, and of course a few Bike Trails.
"Our team stopped in Livermore for celebratory Culver’s mini-martini’s,
Jen and Rashid’s for pleasant charcuteries and pasta lunch, Easton Pizzeria for dinner,
Lisa and John’s farm for second Mexican Dinner…finally Chez Grace for late night ramen,
cereal and yogurt.
"With minor tweaks, we’ll probably ride same route next year…we’ll see."
* And starting this year Flèche riders get unpaved credit from RUSA,
though Mike didn't know that before the ride.

Wild Cat Ptarmigans
|
|
Vernon reports: "The Wildcat-Ptarmigan Flèche team rode From Louisville to Wyoming and back via Horsetooth,
Laporte, Carr, the “Welcome to Wyoming” sign, Wellington, and the Ft. St. Vrain power plant
(which is half a mile past the area of Colorado called Wildcat).
Of course we had perfect weather. The wind was favorable, there was no rain,
and the temperatures were excellent.
"We had four of the original Wildcat-Ptarmigan members (Dustin, Vernon, Tom and Oksana) and filled our empty spot with Debbie because David Weigel couldn’t make it this year. It was a good team.
"We had lunch at the taco truck in Laporte and in a few minutes the only other
Flèche team rolled in after coming down from Red Feather.
We rode through Carr without stopping headed up to Wyoming,
but stopped to use the spigot on the back of the church recreation center on the way back.
Other than that, there are no services for the 80 miles between Laporte and Wellington.
"We finished with a tour of Broomfield which was quite nice. Good team, good Flèche.

Most change for the better in one week in April!
20
starters and
20
finishers rode the Stove Prairie 200k.
We delayed one week because of snowy weather leading up to the original date.
Mike reports:
"So glad we delayed. A few wet roads early and chilly, but nice calm winds, then tail wind up the Poudre Canyon.
I heard a few PRs were set. :-) A crash on I-25 delayed a couple of folks getting to the ride start,
but they managed to get underway within the hour time limit.
They caught the party train at Sandy’s on the way home.
What a fantastic Colorado spring day!!"

Best "Sojourn" Weather Ever!
6
starters and
6
finishers rode the South Platte Sojourn - Populaire 157k. Jason Bordelon
graciously stepped up to lead this ride and reports:
"The ride was challenging (as expected!) but the weather could hardly have been better.
The dirt roads to Deckers were nice and all 6 of us who started finished,
with all of us riding together for more or less most of the ride.
We had lunch at Deckers (including some enormous ice cream cones) and
I think everyone was ready for and enjoyed the descent back into Chatfield.
"This route is harder than many of the eastern 200k brevets,
but definitely worth it to get out west early in the season."

Second Ever Bo-Lar Boogie!
10
starters and
10
finishers rode the Bo-Lar Boogie 200k. Mike Turek reports:
"Today was our Farewell to Jason Turner ride.he’s moving to Tulsa in a few weeks to double
the number of RUSA members there. Weather forecast was wonderful for February,
but we became concerned during pre-ride brief; folks had trouble hearing due to the wind.
Luckily, they calmed as we cycled along our familiar foothills roads.
By the time we reached Sandy’s the sun was warming us nicely.
"The westerly winds increased substantially, making a pretty fast trip to Johnstown.
The re-route to Colorado 17 gave us a larger shoulder and fewer cars - a keeper for all our routes.
However, the wind gods would exact justice during return to Longmont.
Once we turned right on CO 34, progress slowed considerably.
Tenacity for the riders was rewarded with the turn south to Louisville,
the last 20 miles providing a nice cooldown into the finish.
"Jason promised to create some gravel routes so we can come out and grab a new state.
He’ll also be riding the first USA Audax 600k out of St. Louis May 24th.
If folks want to join, let Mike Turek know for carpooling efforts."

"7 Brave Cold Weather Warriors cycled into the Icy Fog following the Arkansas River Valley towards La Junta.
First time in recent memory we kept every article of clothing on all day!
We quickly broke into 2 groups - Hammers and Touristic.
Unfortunately we could not see the Sangre De Cristo peaks to the west … but we did
see many other interesting sites along the way: The Ice Trees, Frosty Cows
(2 looking lost standing next to the road), remote roads with few cars, and nice folks
wondering what we were doing out. Oh, and a Crowley County sheriff worried about our safety -
A reminder to carry Lights and reflective gear on every ride. We needed both all day long."
