 RMCC's Memorial Day Bike Tours

It's not to soon to make cycling plans for Memorial Day, but if you wait, it might be too late! Don't miss RMCC's Recreational/Performance Memorial Day tour in the Grand Junction area for two days of moderate/challenging riding. This Memorial Day ride features winery tours, SAG support, and group rate accommodations at the Grand Junction Hilton. Day one offers a 50 mile tour of the Colorado National Monument with optional tours at local wineries in Palisades. Day two promises a challenging 75 mile out-and-back tour of the Grand Mesa. The cost of this tour is $25.00 per person, riders supply their own meals and riding food. Group rates are available at the Hilton at a rate of $69.00 per night, double or quad occupancy, until May 12, 1995. The regular rate of $89.00 will apply for reservations made after May 12, 1995. Call the Hilton at (303) 241-8888 for hotel reservations. Tour registrations will be accepted until May 5, 1995, send your check payable to Rocky Mountain Cycling Club, P.O. Box 101473, Denver, Colorado 80250-1473. For details call Dave Van Abel or Sue Lemons.

The Memorial Day challenge offers three days of passes in the Rockies. This is a performance ride requiring long mileage and climbing. Short options are available on all three days with daily averages of 60- 70 miles for the short loops. Day one includes Squaw and Loveland Passes. Day two covers Vail and Tennessee Passes with an option to the top of Independence Pass. Day three takes riders over Freemont Pass, returning over Loveland Pass.

The cost of this tour is $110.00, and covers lodging and SAG support. Riders supply their own meals and riding food. Paid registration deadline is May 12, 1995, and is limited to 15 riders. A tour highlight is a night at the historic Nordic Inn in Twin Lakes. This former stage coach stop features an old fashioned feather bed in each room and has the Tavern Restaurant for a great dining experience.

This ride will be led by Charlie Henderson and Barry Nash. Send your check made payable to Rocky Mountain Cycling Club, P.O. Box 101473 Denver, Colorado 80250-1473 for registration or contact Barry Nash for details.

RMCC News via cyberspace! ! How about receiving all club information via your computer, rather than the good old U. S.. mail?

We are investigating the possibility of sending the monthly newsletter by e-mail to interested club members. We are also examining the possibility of a forum to publish general club information, i.e. yearly ride schedule, upcoming events, membership sign up, and current member discounts.

If you are interested in participating in the RMCC newsletter test program, send an "E" to Rocky at this temporary address:

1995 JERSEYS ARRIVE IN TIME FOR SPRING TRAINING

The 1995 RMCC team jerseys have arrived and will be available for pickup at the April rides or call Joe Lookingbill to make other arrangements. These jerseys are pre-orders only, however, a limited number of these great looking jerseys will be available at the Denver Spoke for full retail price.

TRAIN NOW FOR THE DENVER ASPEN CLASSIC

The variable Colorado weather has been kind to us this year, allowing us the benefit of early spring training for the annual goals we have set for the 1995 season. If you are scheduling the Denver Aspen Classic on your calendar (July 29, 1995) and have been following the RMCC training schedule, you will be ready for this challenge. It is not too late to get in shape for what is going to be one of the premier rides in Colorado. The ride will offer a long version (200 miles Denver to Aspen) and shorter version (154 miles Conifer to Aspen) but remember the last 20 miles is downhill into Aspen!!!!! If you are interested in riding or in volunteering call Charlie Henderson.

YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE
By Marcia Davison

IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT.....

Well, no. It was actually a cool, sunny Sunday, but the wind was howling just the same when a handful of souls met at Exit 255, north of Johnson's Corner for the 6th weekend of the RMCC's 1995 ride schedule.

We took off as a group at 11:00 a.m. and headed east on County Road 54 for 16 miles of the sweetest tailwind this side of the Wyoming border. I tucked in between two other riders and we had a pleasant little spin at sustained speeds of about 24 m.p.h.

Now, just as the law of physics says what goes up must come down, we all know that the laws of cycling say: Whoever gets a tailwind on the way out gets a hell-bender headwind on the way back. And that's what we got, but only after dealing with a ruthless crosswind for several southwesterly miles down Highway 85, and various side roads leading to Highway 60. This time there was no one to tuck in behind, no sweet spot in which to stay out of the path of the relentless wind. Then the fun started.

We had 15 miles due west to cover, straight into the gale. I scrunched down behind Joe, our fearless leader and friend, as my two cruising buddies from earlier took off well ahead. We spun in our little gears at speeds of 8 -10 m.p.h. on totally flat terrain. At one point, I lost my draft and found myself hopelessly spinning in my granny gear at 5 m.p.h.

We eventually regrouped in Johnstown and continued the grind another 8 miles back to the park-and-Ride exhausted, but smiling. It had been a heluva good ride!

Nine riders participated in the ride. Three rode the 50 mile loop, four completed the shorter ride of 35 miles (40 after one wrong turn), and two finished a shorter out-and-back ride.

You should have been there!

Denver-Aspen Classic Is A Success

This year's Denver A ride was held July 29th with 69 riders participating in the first open-to-the-public Denver-Aspen Classic. Twenty-two of the thirty-four Medallion riders completed the 200 mile course within the 18 hour time limit. Gary Lunsky was the first to finish with a time of 11 hours and 34 minutes. Mike Futton, Chris Grealish, and Charlie Hayes were the next three finishers and completed the ride in 12 hours 25 minutes. Seven riders missed the turn to Hartsel and were disqualified, while five riders received a Did Not Finish classification. Twenty-one of the thirty-five Standard Riders completed the 155 Miles from Aspen Park to Aspen. Michael Aback finished the 155 mile at 4: 11 p.m. with Carol Mitchell arriving 27 minutes later, and Randy Durbin and Mike Ponek completed their rides at 4:58 p.m. Three of the Standard Riders were disqualified, while eleven were classified as Did Not Finish.

Rules were enforced for the safety of the riders and the welfare of the RMCC. Not only were the Colorado public safety laws enforced, but the riders were also required to sign in at check points and a mandatory time limit was imposed to insure that the riders were able to negotiate the final pass, (Independence Pass) ,before dark. A rider, upon being informed after arriving at Twin Lakes nine minutes late . He was pulled from the ride, simply saying, "So, where's the sag wagon?"

The riders praised the 25 volunteers who worked so hard and gave their time, effort and energy , and for some of them gave up one of their favorite rides to make the Denver Aspen Classic one of the best supported rides in Colorado this year. Volunteers did everything from shuttling luggage, offering sun screen in Grant, and cutting the crusts off of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. A remarkable job was done by some very unselfish people. They all deserve a hardy thanks from all the club members. RMCC volunteers have started a tradition, that as a rider, I hope will continue through all future Denver-Aspen Classic rides.

Best quote at the top of Independence Pass, " I hope I don't look that bad when I'm dead" .David Firmin.

RMCC MEMBERS QUALIFY AND FINISH THE PARIS-BREST-PARIS

Ten RMCC members qualified for and participated in this year's Paris-Brest-Paris ride. The P-B-P is a grueling ride of 1204 kilometers demanding a qualifying time of under 90 hours containing 30,500 feet of elevation gain. Americans had a good showing this year with 300 participants out of the total 4,000 international racers, with all but 23 finishing. The race is a French national event and was covered by all of the newspapers and national television. The ten members of the RMCC who qualified and rode this year were: Mike Fulton, Robert Fourney, Robert Hoffman, Kathy Morris, Jann Coury, Charles Henderson, Rex Farnsworth, Jon Davis, Ken Billingsley, and Ben Staggs. RMCC member and multiple RMM winner, Bob Fourney finished eleventh overall. "This is truly the pinnacle of the amateur races", says Charles Henderson who competed in his first P-B-P. Congratulations to all who participated!!!

The Rocky Mountain region would not have had such a great presence at this year's event if not for the tremendous efforts of RMCC member Gary Koenig, who devoted many long hours and stepped forward to arrange the series of brevets our riders had to qualify in, before they could enter the race. Thank you Gary!!!

SEPTEMBER MEETING

The September planning meeting of the RMCC will be held on Monday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m at the home of Joe Lookingbill. Agenda items include planning the 1996 ride schedule and season, critique of the Denver-Aspen classic and scheduling ride leaders for the remainder of the 1995 season. Volunteers and participants in the Denver-Aspen Classic are especially invited and encouraged to attend this meeting, as your input is vital for a successful 1996 Denver-Aspen. Call Joe Lookingbill for further information.

With our membership now at 329, ride leaders are needed for the remainder of the season. Ride leaders are asked to hand out maps, which are provided, and sign up riders. It is not necessary to sign up for a life time; one ride will be a great help. Our volunteer bank is in need of a deposit, and your help and thoughts are appreciated. If you are interested in becoming a ride leader, call Joe Lookingbill, Barry Nash, or Charlie Henderson.

The RMCC extends a sincere apology to all of its members for the cancellation without notice of the August 26th Estes Park-Trail Ridge ride.

November 1995 Issue

Farewell to 1995

RMCC would like to thank all the volunteers who have made the 1995 season such a tremendous success. Not only were we able to put on a truly unequaled weekend ride schedule, but we also produced low cost tours such as the Colorado Contrail, and special events like the Lookout Mountain Hill Climb, the Grand Loop, and the Denver-Aspen Classic.

We hope that each of our members were able to use the club to obtain their own personal goals, whether it was to simply enjoy a ride with friends, or to compete in the Paris Brest Paris. Our goal is to provide a ride schedule that will challenge all our members.

1996 Season is on the Drawing Board

The steering committee has been hard at work for the last two months setting up the 1996 ride schedule. The changes that were made in the 1995 recreational and performance schedule were such a success that those changes will remain the same for the coming year. Mileage on all R/P ride will top out at 68 miles. For those who enjoy socializing off the bike, the Picnic Ride has been moved to May 25th.

In 1996, six double centuries are the focal point of an new series, the Super Ranndonneur Series. This series will be conducted as brevets, and the riders will be required to complete each ride within a specified time limit. A rider must complete any three rides and volunteer to support one additional ride to qualify for a special commemorative jersey and the possibility of being selected for the RMCC RAAM Team for 1997.

RMCC ON THE WEB

RMCC is now on the Internet. Our schedule of upcoming events, tours, and weekend rides can soon be accessed from your home computer. We are still setting up our home page, but everything should be fully functional by December 15. Visit us in cyberspace.

Charlie Promises a Kinder and Gentler Contrail

Colorado Contrail tour director, Charlie Henderson says this year's Contrail will offer something that has never been offered: a day off in the middle of the week long ride. With two consecutive nights in Twin Lakes, riders will be able to choose from a variety of activities, such as horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, or even a trip over Independence Pass into Aspen. Start making your vacation plans now.

1996 Jerseys

We're considering a color change for the 1996 club jersey. The basic design will remain the same, but we felt that a new color for the new year might be warranted. We are considering changing the vivid purple base color to a Lincoln Green, a dark but bright green. We welcome your input and would like your comments on the jerseys. Call Joe Lookingbill.

Arena and Avocet for 1996

To insure availability and early delivery of Arena and Avocet products in 1996, we will be sending our order form out early. In past years we have had to wait longer for the products due to seasonal demand from bike shops. This year we hope to be first on the list. So watch your newsletters for the order forms, and place your orders as soon as possible. These bargains only come once a year. You don't want to miss your opportunity for 50% savings on top quality merchandise.
