1999 Brevet Series in Review

Here are the compiled results for our 1999 brevet series.  We had 27 brevet finishers, including 7 remote to Colorado (Tex., Mich., Calif.), of whom 19 went to Paris-Brest-Paris (13 from the RMCC).

Comparison with 1998 Brevets – Included for comparison are the finishing times of those also completing 1998 brevets.  The conclusions to be drawn are limited at best, since riders’ goals and circumstances often overshadow course or weather differences.  Still,  here’s a rundown:

·         200km – Riders were up to an hour faster in 1999: because of flooding, the course was shortened a bit, and there was more (fast) main road mileage (Hwy. 66 and US-85).

·         300km – Most early riders were essentially as fast as in 1998; later riders were 1-1½  hours slower: the course was a bit hillier, but winds probably made the biggest difference.  Bob Fourney’s slightly slower time in 1999 may be from riding his HPV.

·         400km – I was most interested to see if a 4000 ft. climb up Lefthand Canyon followed by Carter Lake and Horsetooth would increase the times (I estimated about 1½ hours); ignoring weather and mechanical problems, many riders took only ¾ - 1½ hour longer on this course.

·         600km – Even less can be concluded from the 600km, since most people took at sleep break; Bob Fourney rode nearly straight through, however, and took 3 hours longer this year – like the 400km, we had a 4000 ft. climb, then Horsetooth.

200km Brevet – 2 May 1999 – Northglenn - Evans - Gunbarrel

Typical difficult weather for our 200km, despite our holding it in May instead of April.  Riders drove through a steady downpour to the ride start.  Flood warnings on the South Platte near Evans forced us to run the outbound route straight east on Hwy. 66 to US-85, up to Evans and back on US-85, thus missing out on the picturesque lowlands and feedlots on the county roads near Evans.  Two riders did the extra-credit 155-mile option, new for this year.

300km Brevet – 15 May 1999 – Littleton - Castle Rock - Black Forest - Chatfield

Typical good conditions for this ride, toasty at times, and typically windy, with strong, warm downslope winds building off the Palmer Divide by mid-morning.  Riders were buffeted eastbound to Kiowa and toiled uphill to Elbert, the windforce increasing with time, so that the later you were, the more you were slowed by the wind (which turned into a headwind by Sedalia).  Riders enjoyed Charlie Henderson’s safer route revisions, including the back roads to and from Sedalia in place of I-25, Tomah Road coming back into Castle Rock, the climb out of Castle Rock to the secret checkpoint manned by his horses, and the Chatfield bike path.
